ADMAVEN - The Interactive Advertising Blog: Everyone Hates Social Media

  • Kat · 5 months ago
I saw these articles and the thing that kills me is that none of them come out and say it: social media is about the SOCIAL and not the MEDIA. Brands/companies should only use it when they want/are ready to engage with their passionate fans in a mutual relationship. If you don't want to actually interact with your customers on an everyday and meaningful way (and you should be honest with yourself here- it's too easy to say you want to but not really mean it) then you shouldn't be using social media.

Very true - it's important to respect the idea of a two way discussion with actionable outcomes. Much like Liz Claiborne did in their latest brand re-launch effort:

Something's got to give--in the near future--I hope. Social media when used responsibly is priceless. Besides, there's no going back. The people who shamelessly exploit themselves via SM lack discipline, plain and simple. Quantity without quality will prove a brutal master, but until then, who can afford not to be in this race?

I have been wondering about this Xochi - do you really think there is no going back?

As the economy recovers and companies are more content to spend on huge media buys, will the old guard make a resurgence? Is innovation in danger in the digital space?

Going back? Maybe in the event of a catastrophic hit to the infrastructure--like repeated and prolonged Fail Whales (belly-up? God forbid.) Paradigms have already shifted. Sure the "old guard" will buy a shiny new suit, but I'm willing to bet with moderate success. More money spent on traditional media will still fall on many a deaf ear. What's worse, digital WOM can be venomous towards fat, dismissive corporations. Would you want to do battle with 13yr. old YouTube assassins? Talk about guerilla warfare!

13 year old YouTube assassins? How about millions of motivated young protesters?!? This TED video draws a great comparison as well:

It's like the Steinberg cartoon of a New Yorker's view of the world. Those of us who were early proponents and who actually have track records in social media think everyone understands what we're talking about.

But the fact is, corporations are just now waking up to the fact that two-way communication is not a fad.

And thousands of unexperienced, unqualified snake oil salespeople and self-appointed gurus are selling to corporations who are hungry for help.

Sadly, a lot of those campaigns don't work - and the companies think it is social media what is the problem, not the gurus.

Sigh. It's not negativity, It's reality.

Agreed B.L . - thanks for adding your clarification. Was meant to parody the fact that the early adopters are all getting tired of the same thing at the same time!

Its just back-lash from the media hypsters. It is a natural part of the hype-cycle. Given the ungodly attention social media has been getting in the media, I am actually surprised it didn't hit sooner. These folks will move on to talking about the next thing as soon as we tell them what "the next thing" is. Once they move on it will level out and then we will start to see realistic reporting and approaches on the channel.
